YEAR 7 CAMP
Every year the whole of Year 7 are taken away to Llangollen for a
week of camping and outdoor education. The whole event is organized
by the P.E. Department. Each child will spend two nights camping and
two days activities. The camp is very successful and enjoyable
with many Staff and Sixth Formers helping out. Activities include
: walking, climbing and abseiling, orienteering and canoeing with
a full and varied evening programme of team building activities and
bonfire sing songs!
THE ANNUAL SKI TRIP
Every year The PE Department organises a ski trip abroad. Last year
1996/97 we went to The Italian Alps with 150 pupils and about 20 adults!
This year we have two trips, one with 40 pupils to New Hampshire U.S.A
and one with 60 pupils to The Italian Alps again.
To help prepare the pupils, we organize three evening visits each
year to a local dry ski slope where instructors train the pupils ready
for the main trip.
CANOE TRIPS
Last year there was a successful trip up to Scotland for the canoe
club pupils but we also organize weekend residential trips to the
Conway Centre on Anglesey where Year 9 pupils can gain experience
in sea canoeing.
Instructors from Chester Canoe Club work with us both at school (in
the pool), on the river and on organized trips.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEME
This is run by the PE Department and is now very popular with over
100 pupils taking part. Between 35 and 40 Year 9 pupils start the
award at Bronze level and many of those (usually 30+) go on to do
Silver. Last year we had a Gold group who were successful but this
year there will be two Gold groups.
Parents come into school to help with the administration and other
parents help with running the pupils to various parts of Snowdonia
for their expeditions.
The award demands a lot of not only the pupils but also the staff
who give up their weekends to supervise the groups and for this the
School is very grateful.
C. S. L. A. COURSES
This award has been running for two years now and both Sixth Form
and Staff have enjoyed the experience of both learning and teaching
leadership skills. Staff have gone on courses each year to prepare
appropriately and the pupils have benefited from this and also had
the opportunity to go out into our local junior schools to teach.
SPORTS TOURS TO CONWAY
Each year we take about 17 boys (Rugby) and 20 girls (Netball and
Hockey) to the
Conway Centre to stay and play other schools for a weekend. The pupils
are all from
Year 7 and it is an ideal way to really get their interest going for
these sports!
As we play Welsh schools we call the trip an 'International Tour'!!
Each pupil receives a medal and certificate to commemorate the occasion.
